Wooden shed

Do you really need a wooden shed?

Do you really need a wooden shed? This can be any space where you can literally be yourself without having to think about the opinions of others. The space can be messy or tidy. It can be filled with tools you need, woodworking, mechanical, gardening, painting or whatever reflects your interest. It is a space that does not have to be tidied up when you are in the middle of a project. Best of all, it is a place where the mind can switch off from daily worries and focus on a project of your own choosing. You can do what you want without constant criticism or interference.

Why a wooden shed is this necessary?

This is a place where one can be completely unplugged. We hear a great deal about mental health these days. Handwork, creating something new, and expressing your own point of view in a place of your own provides a great release or freedom. It allows for the satisfaction of completing a project and gives a sense of achievement.

Does it have to be an actual wooden shed?

The simple answer is of course not. However, a dedicated space of any sort is ideal. The size is not important either, provided it is adequate. Ultimately, it is a place where your mind can express itself through the hands. The space can be represented in almost every situation.

Projects can be:

  • messy,
  • smelly,
  • dusty
  • noisy.

Ideally the “shed” should be able to be isolated from shared spaces or intrude on someone else’s space.

The shed becomes more important as family commitments are replaced by emptiness. Even if you have never picked up a tool in the past, this is a space where you can try anything, daydream, drink tea, and tinker. There is plenty of other room to watch TV or plug into the wider world. A shed is a place where all that goes away.

Philosophy of the Wooden Shed

Some of the ideas behind the wooden shed are:

  • To make the most efficient of resources – try not to create waste
  • Use reclaimed materials whenever possible
  • Use natural finishes such as vegetable-based oils and beeswax
  • Be mindful of the consequences of what you are doing
